The Martial Disciplines of Jeet Kune Do

Bruce Lee said, "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own." This principle has led to the incorporation of techniques from many different martial styles. Here are some of the major contributing disciplines:

Jun Fan Gung Fu Boxing

Jun Fan Gung Fu Boxing

Bruce Lee began studying Wing Chun Kung Fu at an early age in Hong Kong and then began to adapt it after moving to the United States. He developed Jun Fan Gung Fu by combining lessons learned from Western Boxing, Northern and Southern Kung Fu styles, wrestling and grappling methods, and other styles with his foundation of Wing Chun. This knowledge has been continued, augmented by adding additional knowledge from other various styles, and passed down by Guro Dan Inosanto to students around the world.
Wing Chun Kung Fu

Wing Chun Kung Fu

This close style of combat relies on developing leverage and sensitivity rather than muscular strength and size to overcome an opponent. It also allows a student to transition from one combat range to another while preserving the “feeling” of the opponent(s) and still be cognizant of other threats surrounding them.
Kali, Arnis, & Escrima

Kali, Arnis, & Escrima (stick and blade defense)

Various concepts from the Philippines and surrounding areas have been incorporated into JKD to master movement with superior footwork against stick and bladed weapons. These concepts are taught to students of JKD in order to allow them to use and defend against weapons in all of the combat ranges.
Muay Thai Kick Boxing

Muay Thai Kick Boxing

These techniques and methods bring power (regardless of one’s size), use natural weapons (knees, elbows, feet, and fists) during an altercation and provide excellent physical fitness. Also, they can be used in various combat ranges intertwined with the other concepts of JKD.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Using leverage, knowledge of one’s body, and good technique, this formidable system allows a student to feel confident both while standing and on the ground in order to subdue and de-escalate situations against a larger attacker.
